Some general things to do in North Cyprus

Holiday makers keen to visit North Cyprus will be rewarded with clear, warm beautiful turquoise seas, clean sandy beaches, stunning natural beauty, many historic and culturally fascinating sites to visit, an enviable laid back pace of life, fabulous and highly affordable food and drink and of course the famous Cypriot warm welcome.

In fact, if you’re considering going anywhere else on your holiday this year, don’t!
North Cyprus really is as beautiful as they say, it really has remained unspoilt and it definitely is the hidden and most striking jewel in the Mediterranean crown!

Holidays in Northern Cyprus are a relaxing affair! The pace of life on the island is unhurried, you will find the people have all day to sit and chat about life, and meal times are languid, leisurely and hugely enjoyable.

Because the North side of Cyprus was underdeveloped during the 1960s and 1970s when bad building practices in the rest of the world allowed for ugly concrete high rise buildings on every beach front, Northern Cyprus remains untouched and unspoilt. Development today has been restricted by the government in terms of density, height and proximity to areas of outstanding natural beauty or interest meaning that though you will see some construction here, you will not see an island destroyed by developers.

Northern Cyprus is a haven for those seeking sunshine and sandy beaches, it is also a popular destination for those interested in mountain climbing, hiking, wildlife, sailing, diving, history, art and culture.

If you’re planning your holiday in Northern Cyprus between the months of May and September it will be very easy to pack! Bring plenty of shorts, t-shirts, swimming gear and sunscreen. You won’t need anything else! Summer starts in May, though you can start to sunbathe from March, and it continues until at least September meaning that those in search of a suntan will not go home disappointed!

If you would like to visit out of season avoid December and January as they are the wettest and coldest months, though you still get some beautiful sunny days. Other than those two months Cyprus is a welcoming destination at any time of the year and there is always something happening, something to see and things to do whenever you choose to take your holiday.
During peak season hotel beds are booked up quite quickly, in fact there has been a problem with a lack of holiday beds in recent years as North Cyprus’s appeal becomes wider known. Astute developers and hoteliers are aware of this fact and are extending facilities to accommodate more guests, but you’d be best advised to book a hotel before you come to avoid disappointment!

If you’re taking your holidays in Northern Cyprus this year chances are you’ll be flying into Ercan airport. Direct flights to Ercan are still someway off - though seemingly in constant negotiation if local and international press reports are anything to go by! If you can’t get a flight to Ercan, because it is a very popular destination nowadays, you can always consider flying to Larnaca or even Paphos airports on the South side of the island and then travelling to the North either with a taxi or even a hire car. You can pre-book a taxi from the North...try Ibo Taxi or consult the North Cyprus Buzz Book and make a few calls.

There are so many things to do and see when in North Cyprus that it would be impossible to list them all, but here are a few suggestions for your holiday Itinerary…

- Visit one or all of the following castles - St. Hilarion, Buffavento, Kantara and Girne Castle. - Take a trip to ancient Salamis. - Drive up to the end of the Karpas Peninsular, stroke a donkey, enjoy the amazing beaches and watch a beautiful sunset! - Spend many an afternoon and evening on the harbour in Kyrenia enjoying the beautiful setting, a cool Efes beer and the fantastic ambience. - Sunbathe on Turtle Beach and swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean. - Enjoy a hot and cold meze followed by a mixed kebab and a Turkish coffee. - Buy lots of genuine fake designer gear at very low prices. - If you’re lucky enough to come in the spring time take an organised orchid walk or a walk by yourself in the mountains to look at the beautiful flowers. - And if you have any time left over you can take a boat trip on the Med or all the way to the Turkish mainland.
Come and enjoy Northern Cyprus, I doubt you’ll want to leave!
